Over the counter reflux/ colic/ GERD medications are very often used by new parents with the hope that it’ll help their babies. Recent evidence suggests that these medications could have adverse effects on the baby.

Even though it can be hard to deal with a very upset baby, hang in there, it does get better. Use some of our strategies from our colic infographic to calm your baby instead.

“Several studies have shown that these medications are ineffective at treating symptoms associated with reflux in the absence of endoscopically proven oesophagitis. With a lack of evidence for efficacy, attention is now being turned to the potential risks of gastric acid suppression. Previously assumed safety of these medications is being challenged with evidence of potential side effects including GI and respiratory infections, bacterial overgrowth, adverse bone health, food allergy and drug interactions.”
